Overview: A barberry grown for its deep crimson-purple foliage on a dwarf, mounding plant.

Mature size: Varies by cultivar, from 1–3 ft. dwarf forms up to the species' full 3–6 ft..

Sun exposure: Full sun to partial shade; best foliage color in full sun

Flowering season: Spring, with small yellow flowers followed by red berries in fall

Hardiness: USDA Zones 4–8

Water needs: Average; drought-tolerant once established

Special features: A dwarf selection, more compact than the species. Dense, thorny, deer-resistant deciduous shrub; berries attract birds; note that Japanese barberry is listed by the NC Invasive Plant Council as spreading into natural areas in parts of the state — sterile Sunjoy® Group cultivars are bred not to spread by seed, an easy way to sidestep that concern

Wildlife value: Berries eaten by birds; dense thorny form offers cover

Botanical name: Berberis thunbergii 'Crimson Pygmy'

Category: Shrubs & Trees
