Native Southeastern shrub with drooping, bottlebrush-like flower spires and excellent red-purple fall color that persists into winter; spreads by suckering to form a colony over time, useful for erosion control on slopes; resistant to Phytophthora root rot; blooms on old wood, so prune right after flowering
